BTS: NY Women’s Buying Show

Yesterday, I had the awesome opportunity to attend the New York Women’s Buying Show at the Javits Center. I went on behalf of Luna Chick, a local boutique, to do buying for the fall season, and I had a great time! The event gave me a cool behind the scenes look at the inner workings of brands and boutiques, and allowed me to scope out some hot new trends. I’m super grateful that I got to experience it, and wanted to share some of my thoughts and observations with you all!

Let me set the scene for those of you who have never been to a trade show: basically, the huge convention center was separated into various categories depending on the item. Accessories, designer garments, more everyday pieces, etc. Each brand or label at the show had their own booth, some of which were impeccably designed—think walls of flowers and disco lights—that held many of the pieces from their new collections. There were racks on racks on racks of clothing—my dream come true! If only I could’ve bought things! The items are sold at a lower wholesale price, and buyers from boutiques such as the one I went with walk around and pick all of the things they want to carry, what sizes they want, and how many.

Since Luna Chick is one of my favorite stores and carries some great brands, I got to visit the booths of tons of brands I love. I even (sometimes unknowingly) met the designers behind the brand, like at Veronica M. To name a few, I perused the racks at Honey Punch, Just Black Denim, Olivaceous, Free People, and LUSH. All of these brands are so awesome and have some great things coming up for the fall! I don’t want to give away anything, but I saw some seriously awesome trends. I loved getting an exclusive look at what stores will be carrying soon.

It was such a cool feeling to be a part of picking what Luna Chick will carry. I loved giving my input and having discussions with the staff about what would and wouldn’t work for their average customer. Although I love to shop, I don’t usually think about all of the work that goes into creating a successful store, and a large part of that is knowing your audience and giving them what they want. I’m so excited to see some of the pieces I picked and loved in the store next time I visit!

This was truly an awesome experience and I’m so thankful to the ladies at Luna Chick for allowing me to come along. Check them out here! If you want to know more about my experience, feel free to comment below!
